About the area:
Fort Myers is a great base from which to enjoy the Gulf Coast of Florida. You're within easy reach of great golf, fishing, boating, swimming, water sports, shelling, wildlife watching, eating and shopping ... and more. Naples is thirty minutes down the road, with the extraordinary Everglades just beyond. Tampa & Busch Gardens are an hour and a half north, and Disney is only 2 hours away.
But it’s the beaches, the golf, the wildlife and the ocean that bring most people to Florida's Gulf coast. Glorious Sanibel and Captiva Islands are just 15 minutes across the Sanibel causeway. Fort Myers Beach with its silver sands and lively atmosphere is just as close.
Don't miss the wildlife. It's absolutely stunning. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, the Ding Darling wildlife reserve on Sanibel, Lovers' Key on Estero Island, watching manatees in the Caloosahatchee River in the cooler months: these are just some of the places you could spend a long afternoon. And then there's pelicans, and osprey diving / fishing in the lake behind the house; the birds scuttling up and down the seashore, following the waves; alligators in the Everglades and swamps; the dolphins swimming into the surf breaking at the edge of the beach on Sanibel ... whatever turns you on, it's here and it's fantastic.
Shopping: The local Publix (2 minutes by car) and Sweet Bay (so close that you can walk if you choose) are great grocery stores. Both have excellent fresh produce and foods such as sushi, fish and steaks and an extensive selection of fine and everday US and international wines & beer. If you're arriving late, 7-Eleven (24 hour convenience store and gas / petrol) is literally just round the corner. A real life-saver. Blockbuster, Walgreens and more are by Publix.
And for fashion, the huge Miromar Designer Outlets, Tanger Outlet Mall, Bell Tower Shops and other shopping malls are all within a 15 minute drive. There is a Wal-Mart is 5 minutes away with all the usual great bargains. Bell Tower also has a large multiplex cinema.
If you want to use this holiday to get or stay fit, there is a Health Club is within 5 minutes of the house, which offers daily, weekly or monthly membership at reasonable prices. Bikes of all kinds are for hire on Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and elsewhere. And within 5 minutes of the house is the lovely Lakes Park, a great place for biking, walking or running, as well as family fun on the miniature train, kayaks (watch out for the alligators!), and bikes.
